Just had an accident?

Take a breath. Go through these steps one at a time.

  1. 1. Stop and make sure everyone is safe

Stop in a safe place, switch off the engine and put your hazard lights on. If it’s safe, get everyone out and away from traffic.

  2. 2. Call 999 if anyone is hurt or the road is blocked

Ask for the police and an ambulance if needed. If you’re unsure whether someone is hurt, call.

    Call 999
  3. 3. Stay calm and don’t admit fault

Be polite, but don’t say the accident was your fault or apologise for it. Just swap details and leave the rest for later.

Swap details

Tick off what you’ve got from the other driver.

The law says you must stop and give your name and address (and the vehicle owner’s, if different) and the registration to anyone with reasonable grounds to ask. If you don’t swap details at the scene, or someone is injured and you can’t show your insurance there, report it to the police as soon as possible and within 24 hours.

Save the other car’s reg

Take photos

Only when it’s safe to do so.
