Hit by an uninsured or untraced driver?

By the G4 Claims team · Updated 11 October 2026 · Legal review pending

If you were hit by an uninsured driver, or one who drove off and cannot be traced, report it to the police as soon as possible. The Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) handles claims for victims of uninsured and untraced drivers in the UK. Time limits and conditions apply, so check the MIB website or ask us.

Report it to the police

Report the accident to Police Scotland as soon as possible and within 24 hours. MIB claims usually need a police report, and a crime reference number helps.

What the MIB does

The MIB is funded by motor insurers to compensate people injured or whose property is damaged by uninsured or untraced drivers. There are rules on time limits, excesses and what can be claimed – check mib.org.uk for current details.

Can G4 Claims help?

It depends on the circumstances. Uninsured and untraced cases can be more limited than a standard non-fault claim, so we will be honest about what we can and can’t do. Get in touch.
