A comparable replacement vehicle is one that reasonably meets your needs while your own vehicle is off the road after a non-fault accident. It is usually similar in type, size and use, but it is not automatically the same make or model. You need to show a genuine need for a vehicle, and the hire must be reasonable in length.

What “comparable” means
Courts have looked at what is reasonable for the person who suffered the loss. In Lagden v O’Connor (House of Lords, 2003) the court considered when the cost of credit hire can be recovered. In practice, comparable means a vehicle that fits how you use yours – for example seats for the family, a van for work, or a plated vehicle for taxi drivers (where available).

You may be asked whether you have access to another vehicle and how you use yours day to day. Answer honestly – we will explain what is needed.
How long a hire lasts
Hire should be reasonable in length – usually while your vehicle is repaired or, if it is a total loss, until a settlement is offered. We will explain your responsibilities during any hire before anything is arranged.
